40 Elephants is a collaboration between Cynthia Sley, frontwoman of Bush Tetras, and Knox Chandler, a former member of Psychedelic Furs and Siouxsie and the Banshees, who has worked with everyone from R.E.M. to Depeche Mode. Chandler, a multi-instrumentalist and master guitarist, used no keyboards to create the layers of percussion and otherworldly sounds on their debut album. Sley added her lyrics and melodies, creating a unique partnership of sonorous frequencies.

The duo took the project’s name from the 19th-century all-female gang that shoplifted from stores and wealthy homes in London well into the 1950s. Knox and Sley saw a kinship in the gang’s longevity and renegade mentality. For the album cover, Sley drew mugshots of American women who had committed petty crimes to honor the 40 Elephants.
