ABOUT AT TUBBY’S
On his new live album At Tubby’s, Dougie Poole and his band (Mike Etten on electric guitar and James Wyatt Woodall on pedal steel) present stripped down live versions of some of his most treasured songs, recorded in September 2024 during one sold out show at beloved Upstate NY venue Tubby’s Kingston.
While live albums often aim to faithfully capture a live experience, Poole deliberately abandons this approach, electing instead to dub the digital board recordings to his 8-track tape machine, a process he’s compared to “painting on top of a photo that’s already there.” What results are recordings that feel strangely homemade, not just “live” but somehow reanimated, crackling to life with tape artifacts and otherworldly effect tails.
On opener “Los Angeles” guitarist Etten’s classic country licks and Woodall’s soaring steel lines perfectly compliment Dougie’s signature fingerstyle work and golden baritone, setting the stage for the show to come. They go on to reinterpret some of Dougie's most loved songs, offering up some more traditional picked arrangements of previously synthed-out compositions like “Vaping on the Job,” “High School Gym,” “Don’t You Think I’m Funny Anymore” and “Claire.” “Toshiba Sky,” a one off digital single from 2020, receives it’s vinyl debut, before Poole closes with a previously unreleased tune: ”Heaven Sent an Angel & We Got Stoned,” a heartfelt ear worm with one of Dougie’s most memorable hooks to date. There is truly something for everyone on this song-cycle.
